It is not exaggerated to say that without the textile industry, there would be no modernized **. Since the reform and open policy, ** has been listed as one of the 12 key export bases of the littoral spinning and weaving clothing. Up to 1998, there are more than 1100 textile and clothing enterprises, with 200000 jobholders, output value of 6974.33 million RMB and export amount of 267,650,000 dollars. In 1998, among the 50 foreign-trade enterprises with the biggest export amount in **, 8 were textile and clothing enterprises. The textile and clothing industry of ** is an important constituent of the modern economy of the city.
The textile and clothing industry of ** has its superiority: locating on the eastern coast and owning one of the biggest standard container berths in China ——** new berth. What’s more, after the development of many years, an economic environment beneficial for the entrepreneurs has been formed, and it has a relatively high level of economy management, owning a high-quality staff troop and a scientific research and development system. However, it also has some disadvantages. More than 1100 enterprises with small scale and disperser management respectively implement the exportation according to their own mentality. Each of them considers only the present benefit, without the consideration of the long-term development. Moreover, much attention has been paid to the quantity rather than the advance in technology. All of these contribute to the fact that the textile and clothing industry of ** obviously falls behind that of central Yangtze River delta region which is compose of Ningbo and Shanghai.
The entering into WTO has undoubtedly provided the textile and clothing industry of ** with a broader international market, therefore, how the textile and clothing industry of ** strengthen its competitive power and face the challenge is the question which is worthy of our study.
